ZNLT
Meaning “zero net land take”: by adding an extra floor to existing buildings, Covivio created new residential spaces without using up precious land.
Built in the 1950s, the former hub of Mülheim’s steelmaking industry now nestles in the city’s Wittkamp park. Covivio owns all 30 buildings comprising some 150 apartments. To allow as many people as possible to live in this currently highly sought-after district, Covivio decided to increase the capacity of the residential buildings by adding an extra floor. As such, by the end of 2023, 60 modern apartments will be built on the 3rd floor of these historic buildings.
Adding an extra floor allowed us to build 60 new apartments, almost all of which are currently occupied. This major operation also has a sustainable aspect, as we created new homes with zero land take by capitalising on existing structures.
